Advancing Dementia Care Through Education

June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia while encouraging conversations about brain health, early detection, and compassionate support for those affected by memory loss.

At Peaceful Pines Senior Living, this month serves as an important reminder of our responsibility to continually grow, learn, and evolve in the way we care for residents living with dementia. As the number of individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias continues to rise, so does the need for knowledgeable, compassionate caregivers who understand not only the disease itself, but the person living with it.

That commitment to excellence is why we are proud to highlight the work of our Director of Resident Experience, Ashley Rutan, who recently spent time with team members across our communities providing education, training, and support focused on dementia care and best practices.

Building a Stronger Foundation of Care

At Peaceful Pines, we believe exceptional care begins with education. Ashley has been working closely with employees throughout our organization to deepen their understanding of dementia, improve communication techniques, and reinforce person-centered care approaches that help residents feel safe, valued, and understood.

These educational opportunities included training surrounding the Certified Dementia Practitioner® (CDP®) program, a nationally recognized certification that demonstrates a caregiver’s commitment to excellence in dementia care. The certification is designed for healthcare professionals and frontline staff who support individuals living with dementia and requires comprehensive education focused on the many aspects of memory care.

The CDP® certification represents far more than a credential. It reflects a dedication to ongoing learning, professional development, and the pursuit of best practices that improve the lives of residents and families navigating the dementia journey.

Why Dementia Education Matters

More than seven million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease, and that number is expected to continue growing in the coming years. For senior living communities, this means that understanding dementia is no longer a specialized skill, it is an essential part of providing exceptional care.

Dementia affects every individual differently. Changes in memory, communication, behavior, and daily functioning can create challenges not only for those living with the disease but also for their families and caregivers.

Through advanced dementia education, caregivers gain a deeper understanding of:

  • The progression of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias
  • Effective communication techniques
  • Strategies for reducing anxiety, confusion, and agitation
  • Meaningful engagement opportunities
  • Approaches that support dignity, independence, and quality of life
  • Ways to partner with families throughout their loved one’s journey

When caregivers understand the “why” behind behaviors and symptoms, they can respond with greater empathy, confidence, and effectiveness.

The Shift Toward Person-Centered Care

One of the key concepts emphasized throughout Ashley’s training is the importance of person-centered care. Historically, dementia care often focused on correcting behaviors or helping residents adapt to the caregiver’s reality. Today, research and best practices have transformed that approach.

Person-centered care encourages caregivers to meet residents where they are, recognizing their feelings, experiences, and perceptions as real and meaningful to them. Rather than correcting or arguing, caregivers learn to validate emotions, build trust, and create moments of connection. This approach helps reduce frustration and confusion while promoting comfort, dignity, and emotional well-being. Most importantly, it reminds us that a dementia diagnosis does not define a person. Behind every diagnosis is an individual with a lifetime of experiences, relationships, accomplishments, and stories that deserve to be honored.

The Impact on Our Residents, Families, and Team Members

The benefits of dementia education extend far beyond the classroom. For residents, it means receiving care from team members who are better equipped to understand their needs and provide support that enhances their quality of life.

For families, it provides reassurance that their loved one is surrounded by knowledgeable caregivers who understand the complexities of dementia and are committed to treating them with compassion and respect.

For our employees, ongoing education builds confidence, strengthens professional skills, and provides valuable tools that can help make challenging situations more manageable and rewarding.

As an organization, investing in dementia education helps us strengthen our culture of care while ensuring we continue to deliver the exceptional experiences our residents and families deserve. It reinforces our belief that every interaction matters and that learning is an essential part of fulfilling our mission.

Thank You, Ashley

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Ashley Rutan for sharing her knowledge, experience, and passion for dementia care with our teams. Ashley brings not only professional expertise but also a genuine commitment to helping others better understand the disease and the individuals living with it. Her ability to educate, encourage, and inspire has already made a meaningful impact on employees across our communities.

By investing her time and energy into developing our team members, Ashley is helping elevate the standard of memory care throughout Peaceful Pines and ensuring that our residents continue to receive the compassionate, person-centered support they deserve.

Looking Ahead

Education is not a one-time event; it is an ongoing journey. Later this year, Ashley will begin hosting educational presentations and community events throughout South Dakota focused on dementia awareness, caregiver support, and best practices in memory care. These opportunities will help families, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and community members gain valuable insights while fostering greater understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

We look forward to sharing more details about these upcoming events in the months ahead.
